José Manuel Felices , a radiologist and university professor, warns about a common post -exercise gesture: showering immediately . According to this specialist, it's recommended to wait 10 to 15 minutes before getting in the shower to avoid dizziness, protect your skin, and allow your body to complete its natural recovery process.
In a video posted on his Instagram profile, Dr. Felices puts it bluntly: “ Never shower after exercising, ” something we do regularly, especially when we go to the gym. The expert in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology explains that, while training, the body raises its temperature, dilates blood vessels, and produces sweat as a thermoregulatory mechanism. “If we finish training and rush to the shower, we interrupt the natural temperature regulation process and it can lead to dizziness or even fainting ,” he points out.

Felices reminds us that sweat also performs an internal cleansing function: “Sweat also carries away toxins that come to the surface of the skin. If we shower right away, we don't allow the body to finish excreting those toxins , leaving a feeling that the cleansing hasn't been completed. It's even as if we're still sweating after showering.” She also warns that this body fluid maintains a slightly acidic pH that protects against bacteria. “If you shower too quickly with alkaline soaps, you upset that balance and your skin becomes more vulnerable, potentially becoming more irritated or dry.”
The recommendation, according to this specialist, is simple: wait fifteen minutes before entering the water . During that time, he advises hydrating, stretching, controlling your breathing, and socializing with your training partners . “Science assures that these processes last about 15 minutes after finishing the activity. Hydrate, breathe, stretch, or socialize with your teammates. And then take that well-deserved and necessary shower,” Felices concludes.
